TEDxFlanders – Jean-Paul Van Bendegem – Religious Atheist

Jean-Paul Van Bendegem is a mathematician and philosopher of science. He is a prominent professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and part-time guest professor at Ghent University. He is vice president of SKEPP (Research Society for Critical Evaluation of Pseudoscience and the Paranormal), president of the NCNL (National Centre for Logical Investigation), and chief editor of their quarterly magazine Logic and Analysis. Why listen to him? Jean-Paul Van Bendegem is a legendary professor of logic. He defends a strictly finite conception of mathematics, with no room for infinity. He calls himself a religious atheist. In his book ‘Tot in der Eindigheid (1997)’, he counterchallenges classical proofs of God by logical arguments and he rejects thoughts on infinity. His interest in the paranormal stems from his interest in the philosophy of science. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Vanuatu – The Banded Sea Krait Snake (2)

Full program link (20 minutes): www.youtube.com The Banded Sea Krait is a highly toxic sea snake that has become a legendary emblem in the various islands of the South Pacific. In Vanuatu it is celebrated in culture as a symbol of power and beauty and death. Visitors who have witnessed the customs of these people will recognise it as the staff used in tribal dance and celebration. The Sea Snake dances are seen in the Northern islands of Vanuatu, on Mota Lava and Vanua Lava in particular, and seem to be a humorous rite celebrating fertility and coming of age into puberty. The tribal performers wear elaborate headdresses and paint their bodies with horizontal white stripes, in resemblances to Sea Snakes found in the surrounding ocean waters. Local legend recounts of how the Sea Snake once saved all the fish in the sea, by driving off the shark who was attempting to fill his belly with them. As the fish were now free to multiply in numbers, apparently the Sea Snakes are now seen as a symbol of fertility and homage to the Sea Snake is meant to promote successful fertility among the tribal members.
